CEO Jacquline Winstanely caught up with Beth Kume-Holland to find out what makes her an inspiring and Inclusive Entrepreneur. Beth is a member of the Inclusive Entrepreneur community

Beth, you are An Inclusive Entrepreneur, a member of our Inclusive Entrepreneurship Community. It would really help me if you could set the scene so our visitors understand not only the concept but the person behind your brand.

"I am the founder of Patchwork Hub, an award-winning startup and social enterprise which supports people whose personal circumstances prevent them working in a conventional 9 to 5 office job and acts as a ‘one-stop shop’ for them to work remotely, access advice, training and a social support network."

What is Patchwork Hub?

"Patchwork Hub is a talent platform run by disabled people, but to be used by everyone. We are utilising technology in our new work ecosystem to provide better options for employers to be more accessible, inclusive and financially successful through digital transformation. Remote working works and disabled people are best practiced at being productive in doing so."

Why did you decide to set up Patchwork Hub?

"Patchwork Hub was born out of a realisation that traditional office-based work practices needlessly exclude many individuals who could thrive in work if they were given more flexibility to work in a way that fitted their circumstances. I started  Patchwork Hub as a way to allow individuals to connect with more accessible remote-based work opportunities.

The global pandemic has shown that a person can work effectively and produce astonishing results, even if they can’t leave their home. We also know that remote working works but one missing piece remains. There needs to be a mainstream recruitment solution that is accessible and inclusive for all. That's where Patchwork Hub comes in.

Too many people are forced to choose between working unsustainably or becoming unemployed.

When my chronic health conditions left me unemployed, it was through disability advocacy work and meeting others in the same position that I developed the vision for Patchwork Hub. Since then, we’ve grown into a disabled-led, certified social enterprise."

Can you share some of your experiences that led you to set up Patchwork Hub?

"I am passionate about inclusive leadership and generating tangible, evidence-based social impact and change. I am a Harvard University Kennedy Scholar, an Oxford University graduate (1st Class Hons) and an international disability rights advocate. I was recently flown to Washington DC to meet with Senators and Congressional offices as a patient advocate and while at Harvard graduate school, changed longstanding discriminatory policy in the institution for students with invisible disabilities.

Before setting up Patchwork Hub, I previously led on Audience and Market Insights at Scope, providing key analysis and communications to help the disability charity deliver its goal of ‘Everyday equality’ for disabled people."

What is the driving force behind your enterprise?

"I truly believe in the power of collaboration and breaking out of our silos and industries and the power of corporate social responsibility to invoke human rights change. I am passionate about working with employers to improve social mobility, raising awareness of neurological conditions and the potential of mental health wellness in improving an individual's quality of life."
